Step-by-step procedure for bringing International Interns to the Netherlands
1. Determine whether the Intern needs a residence permit
Interns from the EU, EEA, and Switzerland don’t require a Dutch work or residence permit.
Interns from outside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland generally need a GVVA, which includes both a residence and work permit.
2. Check whether the Internship meets the requirements
The internship must be part of a study programme at a recognised educational institution abroad.
There must be a signed internship agreement between the intern, the educational institution, and the company in the Netherlands.
Meet the salary threshold of €1.095,90 excl. (2025). Note that this is excl. The holiday allowance.
The intern may only carry out tasks that align with the internship.
3. Submit the GVVA application to the IND
The application must be submitted by the Dutch employer or organisation hosting the intern.
The IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) reviews the application and requests advice from the UWV (the Dutch Employee Insurance Agency).
The maximum duration for an internship permit is one year.
4. Approval and arrival in the Netherlands
Once the application is approved, the intern can travel to the Netherlands and obtain his /her BSN.
If required, the intern must first obtain an MVV (long-stay visa) at the Dutch representation in the home country or country of residence.
The intern receives a residence permit and can officially start the internship.
